Throwback Thursday: Birdwatching at LPPCHEA

Around this time of the year last 2013, I joined Haribon Foundation for a birdwalk at the Las Pinas- Paranaque Critical Habitat (LPPCHEA). It has been my long-time dream to explore Metro Manila’s ‘last coastal frontier‘ (see link for awesome video!), and I’m glad it came true: We saw egrets, kingfishers, and Philippine ducks among others. I was excited to share this experience with Haribon and members of a high school student club, which Haribon gave a seminar to about the importance of migratory birds and wetlands.

See those little white dots in the distance? Egrets! 🙂

Group photo! When they left, the other Haribon members and staff went deeper into the the woods to catch a glimpse of the elusive Philippine duck.

We settled by a lake, trusting the bushes to hide our presence.

Instead, we saw this black-winged stilt:

Sexylegs upon closer inspection, via a spotting scope:

We were about to give up when out of nowhere, we heard a ruffle of feathers and a flock of Philippine ducks descended to the lake, so momentarily that as as soon as they touched the calm surface, they flew away again. We were all so stunned I don’t think anyone managed to take a picture.

No Philippine ducks in the pic, but I swear it happened! :p

I cannot decide which one I like better: the vibrant hues of Kodak Ektar or the pastelly tones of Fuji Superia 400. It’s like choosing between your children T_T
